The fact that he had to run, hide, and seek protection from the police in his older sister’s home is emasculating and castrates Uncle Charlie. The ring Uncle Charlie gives to young Charlie is an important symbol in Shadow of a Doubt, not only that it suggests their “marriage” or extremely close, somewhat incestuous relationship but by presenting this ring, or hole, to young Charlie, it is in an attempt to find something to fill the hole within him that has been caused by the castration of the police’s search of him.
